Derek and Joy’s Wedding – Phuket 1 March 2008

Update (12-Mar): Selected photos of the ceremony and holiday are now available in the Gallery.

The plan was for a beach wedding on Patong Beach but the weather intervened and the happy occasion moved indoors. This proved to be a bonus because the staff at the “Gracelands Hotel” really turned it on. The happy couple were the centre of attention, with a special area adorned with floral arrangements in the middle of the luxurious foyer. As a rule, “luxurious” and Phuket don’t go together but Gracelands is a cut above the average tourist accommodation. It was an amazing sight, with more servants and hotel attendants than wedding guests. The ceremony was simple but moving enough to have all the girls dabbing at their eyes (what wedding isn’t). Azba, Brad, Amanda, Paul and I raced around with still and movie cameras, acting like the Paparazzi while Christine just stood and gazed on, all teary eyed. The event drew its crowd of onlookers, many of whom added to the continual popping of flash lights.

With the deed done, we drank the health of the couple and sampled the sumptuous two tiered cake while the “piano man” played on in the background. After a quick waltz around the floor, the official photographers whisked Derek and Joy outside to begin the usual round of photographs in all manner of unusual poses. The grounds of the hotel are even more spectacular than the inside and once again they attracted an excited crowd of onlookers. This is how to get lots of guests at your wedding without paying for a big meal. All photographed out, the wedding party of 8 retired to the dining room to tuck into the seafood and Thai food buffet. Joy finally got to relax and enjoy the whole event. It certainly is the way to go, easy (as weddings go), simple and so enjoyable.

Old Sparky

After three weeks of no car, due to an LPG backfire blowing up my air-flow meter, I’m finally back on the road!  The last hitch was getting the spark plug out of the back spot – no easy task since the distributor lead had snapped off halfway down the hole!  It finally came out though, and it wasn’t hard to notice that not only had the distributor lead snapped off, but half the spark-plug had blown away as well!!  No wonder the car backfired…

Full of Wind

Had a decent storm the night before last – although it was fairly full of bluff, delivering plenty of thunder and lightning, but only 6.8mm of rain.  There was, however, plenty of wind – with gusts over 100km/hr.  There were a few trees downed in the town, including one next door to us.  It fell onto our neighbour’s fence and their next door neighbour’s roof (not ours thankfully!).  We’ll wait and see what the next storm brings…

Poltzadonia

I had the honour of attending Steve Poltz‘s gig at Fly by Night in Freo last night.  Although there were only about 100 people there, Poltz was in great form with plenty of funny stories and anecdotes fleshing out his great set of songs.  He was on stage for over two and a half hours of energy.  Personal highlights for me were his “Johnny Cash” song, “Cold German” and his intimate encore as we all huddled around as he sung from the Fly By Night bar (pictured).  Top night!

A Good Day Out

With work pretty busy at the moment, it’s been hard to get out fishing. However, with Tim and I purchasing Troy’s boat (he’s off to Perth at the end of the year), we were keen to take it out for a spin. We took it up to the gorge, and had a great morning of fishing – seven barra on, with four landed (two for me, two for Tim). While the ones we landed weren’t huge, there was one at 57cm (pictured) that will fit nicely into the oven whole. We’ll be heading back to one particular snag, as I lost one that looked huge from the size of the head I saw! We capped off the day quite well by finishing a respectable third out of 13 at the local quiz night (and we only had a table of four rather than six to eight!).

Very happy with the day’s events.

Our New House

Recently Emma and I ventured down to Perth to start looking for a house – and found one on the first day of looking! Our settlement is nearly complete, and we thought we’d put a little video snippet of our new home (once we leave Fitzroy Crossing that is) up for viewing. We’re very happy with our purchase, and can’t wait until we get to move in and make it our own.

Weekend in Looma

Emma and I travelled to Looma with a few other teachers (Troy, Sally, Caromy and Marcus) for a weekend of sun, fishing and relaxation. We arrived on Saturday afternoon, the only drama being a(nother) flat tyre on Marcus’s beast (6 this year!) on the way in. Troy joined us from his business in Looma that evening and we enjoyed another great camp meal cooked by Emma.

The next day Troy and I went fishing (getting only slightly bogged in the process) while the rest of the crew set up another camp in a great little spot. Troy landed two small barra and lost one, and I lost one – not bad in an hour’s fishing!

To see all the photos, see the photos.hinchy.org page, and there are also additional ones at Sally’s FaceBook page!

It’s been a while…

…since my last size barra!  It only just fell inside the maximum allowed as well at 79cm.  It took 20 minutes to land, with a team effort required from Troy and myself – after it jumped, it took off straight into a huge root system and lodged itself in there.  Drifting over, we could see the barra in the water it the root system.  Eventually Troy dropped a 100 pound handline with a sinker attached straight onto it and it took off again into open water.  An interesting catch!

School Fire

I miss all the fun! While I was away in Perth last week, a bushfire swept through perilously close to our school – running around our entire school perimeter, and right up against a few buildings, including our sheds, English room and Manual Arts room.

And who said it was socially acceptable to become arsonists in the Kimberley because regular “small” bushfires are better than big ones? Tell that to the residents who live by the school who nearly lost houses, sheds and cars!
